A character is a be (whether human, animal, supernatural or any other type) that intervenes in an artistic work (theater, cinema, book, etc.). The characters are usually the main actors of a fiction and who give momentum to the actions. For example: “The main character of the novel is an immigrant who tries to adapt to the city”, “A talking dog, a walking tree and a sorcerer are the characters that appear in most of the scenes of this play”, "Robert Pattinson stayed with the most important character in the film".

The receiver of a work reconstructs the characters in his mind, from the language and of the images used by the author. Seen from this perspective, each character takes different forms, depending on who observes it; This also occurs when the life of a real person is narrated, since each person's representation of it is intimately linked to their own experiences and previous knowledge.

According to the talent of its creator, the character can be complex (the one that critics know as circular character ) or linear (the stereotyped characters and with few traits of personality ). You can also talk about a type character to name the character model that brings together physical and psychological characteristics already recognized by the public according to tradition.

The conception of a fictional character may be different in each writer's mind. Usually, a very close bond is created that allows you to know your secrets deeper, the most hidden aspects of his personality, his tastes, his needs, his ambitions, even when it comes to secondary characters who do not receive a space greater than a couple of lines in a novel.

The writer must learn to to accept to each and every one of his characters, regardless of their values and principles: for the Health of a work it is so necessary to understand the motivations of a ruthless character than those of a kind one. It is a process that can only be understood through literary creation, the birth of an unequaled bond between two beings that belong to different planes of existence.

One of the biggest challenges that arise when creating a character is to get your story through is coherent, that his personality is consistent over time, that he can identify himself even if his name is not expressly mentioned. There is nothing more rewarding for a writer than witnessing the relationships that his readers have with the characters in his works.

When a character transcends the limits of fiction, becomes part of the lives of its spectators, and they are able to think of him as if he were a real person, to imagine him in various situations and to anticipate his reactions.

Character is also the person distinguished in public life by some characteristic or unique ability : “The Duchess of Alba is considered the public character that most controversies unleashed in the media ”, “A television program has revealed a series of secrets that seriously compromise a public figure whose name they have not yet mentioned”.

The concept of public character does not have a necessarily positive connotation associated: on the one hand, it is used to refer to people of great prestige, with a legacy whose wealth distinguishes it from its peers (as it happens with certain writers, businessmen and very visionary politicians); however, it can also be used in a mocking tone, to indicate striking attitudes on the part of eccentric individuals, or to label certain celebrities by their trajectory (regardless of the quality of their work).
